In 1348 the Black Death, or Bubonic Plague, appeared in Ireland.
The Black Death in Kilkenny is very well documented thanks to the efforts of Friar John Clyn, who lived in St. Francis Abbey. We can see the ruins of the Abbey today in the grounds of the Brewery.
His Annals of Ireland give an eye-witness account of the plague in Kilkenny.

St Canice’s Cathedral and Round Tower is an important religious building in Kilkenny.
The first church beside the tower dates back to the 6th Century AD and is named after St Canice. Cill Chainnigh is the Irish for the Church of Canice.
The Round Tower is the oldest standing structure in Kilkenny City. St Canice’s Round Tower is one of only two Round Towers that people can climb in Ireland.
